RYAN ELLEFSEN + EAST CHAPEL HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

The East Chapel Hill High School String Orchestra features students from grades 9 though 12. This ensemble performs four concerts per year and plays grade IV, V and VI literature.Students who are part of these ensemble are also members of the North Carolina State Honors Orchestra, Duke University String Ensemble, North Carolina Governor's School, and small chamber ensembles. Past performances of the East Chapel Hill High School Orchestra have included the works of Copland, Warlock, Holst, Bach, Beethoven, Handel and Dvorak.

The East Chapel Hill High School Chamber Strings features students from grades 10-12 and entry to this class is by audition only. This ensemble performs Grade V and VI literature and selected members have performed with the North Carolina Symphony as part of their pre-concert performance "Overture Series". The Chamber Strings course combines with the top wind players from the band program to perform in a full orchestra setting. This ensemble enjoyed the honor of performing at the North Carolina Music Educator's Convention in November of 2004, 2007, 2010, 2017 and was selected to be the first high school to perform with the UNCG Orchestras in concert on April 24th, 2012.

Ryan Ellefsen, a Wisconsin native, is the Director of Bands and Orchestras at East Chapel Hill High School, where he directs two concert bands, two orchestras, and two jazz combos. He is also the advisor for the East Chapel Hill Chamber Society, an extra-curricular group of more than 70 students devoted to the lifelong pursuit of chamber music. In addition, he is the faculty advisor to the Tri-M Honor Society and co-founder of the Music Mentorship Program, which pairs high-school students from across the district with middle-school students to create a bridge from the middle to high school.

In an effort to bring quality music into the canon, Mr. Ellefsen has commissioned works by Shawn Okpebholo, Allison Loggins-Hull, and Brian Balmages, and is a published arranger through the publishing company Alfred Music. He has conducted groups at the North Carolina Music Educators Association’s NCMEA In-Service Clinic and with the UNCG Symphony Orchestra, and has presented at the NCMEA In-service Clinic in 2010, 2017, and 2019. In the fall of 2015, he was elected as North Carolina Eastern Regional Orchestra Director of the Year.

During his tenure in North Carolina, Mr. Ellefsen has served as chairperson for the N.C. All-State Orchestra, the Central District Band MPA, and the N.C. Eastern Regional Honors Orchestra, and as a Member-at-Large for the Central District Bandmasters Association. Currently, he is the Honors Band Coordinator for the N.C. All-State Band and is the North Carolina Orchestra Section Chair.

Mr. Ellefsen holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Summa Cum Laude, and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Magna Cum Laude. He earned National Board Certification in the fall of 2010. He enjoys golf, softball, spending time with his wife Amy and their children, Jonah and Gillian, and wrestling with their boxer-hound, Olive.

2022-2024

The 50 State String Orchestra Project is a large-scale consortium commission that is bringing new music to classrooms and concert halls all over the US in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons, with educational and community orchestras in all 50 states commissioning a new piece for string orchestra, similar in difficulty level and scope to Stephanie’s 2011 work for string orchestra Beyond the Gate. Her consortium commissions for chamber music have already brought new string-centered music all across the world, from her 50 State Sonata Project for violin + piano, inspired by the work of her teacher John Kendall, and her World Sonata Project, which was commissioned by violinists from 35 countries in 2016.
